Even though I’m not a big fan of shisha, I have tried it a couple of times with friends when we were younger. We visited shisha cafes during class gatherings to chill and relax, but I never knew what smoking shisha truly meant.. not until I watched this –

This video is totally AWESOME. In the video, Tony demonstrates the steps to take before a shisha smoking session. At first I thought it was a simple to-do video put together for shisha.. To me, smoking shisha seems almost safe. Never realised this was such an illusion and that it’s actually this harmful. I learnt so much!! Love his candid and smooth delivery. Anyway, after watching this I did a quick google on shisha and I’d like to share some of the things this video (and my research) has taught me.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Shisha is another name for Mu’assel, which is a type of flavoured tobacco.
- The soot from the charcoal that seeps into the tobacco, kept in the bowl, contains extra carbon monoxide. All of this actually goes into your lungs.. and this is the same stuff that can be found in your car exhaust fumes!!
- Smoking shisha for an hour is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes!!! IMAGINE THAT!
- Some shisha cafes don’t wash their hoses – if the last user coughs some saliva into the hose and if it so happens that he is suffering from tuberculosis then YOU will be the next one to contract it. * horror*
- Shisha café hoses also usually contain metal. This accumulates rust and when you take this into your body, the iron oxide may make you cough up blood..
- The carcinogens and toxins from smoking shisha can cause shortness of breath and a really serious respiratory illness. *shudders *
- Despite being flavoured, the tobacco still contains all the tar and nicotine that can be found in cigarettes. Do not be fooled by the sweet smelling tobacco!!
- A lot of these seemingly mild and flavoured shisha tobacco contain dye, which contains benzene – a toxic petrochemical that can inflict damage on your bone marrow or blood cells.
After reading this, are you still looking forward to your next shisha smoking session? Not I!!
